US Couple’s Micro Wedding Dreams come True!

Devyn & Jeremy

4th Feb 2025

Micro weddings are growing in popularity both in the UK and internationally. These small weddings are increasing as couples are marrying later in life and they want less guests, according to one report.

And it’s not just pricing that makes them popular. It’s the fact that more couples want an intimate celebration with their closest friends and family.

It was for this reason that Devyn & Jeremy Wright travelled thousands of miles for their two-night wedding celebration at Ellingham Hall.

The couple flew in with thirteen guests all the way from North Carolina in the US. They left the state, famous for the stunning Great Smoky Mountains and opted for the equally beautiful countryside setting in Northumberland for their relaxed micro wedding.

Devyn, who wore a stunning designer dress from the famous Kleinfield Boutique in New York says she and Jeremy fell in love with the UK. So, planning a UK winter wedding was perfect for the globetrotting couple. She says they wanted to make memories by enjoying an unforgettable wedding whilst doing what they love best – travelling.

Notes from the Couple

Why did you choose a Micro Wedding in Winter?

JEREMY: Truthfully, we wanted a winter wedding because Devyn loves long sleeved dresses and that styled perfectly with the darker colours we had planned. Winter has also always been a romantic time of the year for us. We got engaged in November and have always enjoyed the colder months where we can surround ourselves by a campfire, hot chocolate and warm blankets.

DEVYN: Our main consideration for our wedding was that it had to be intimate. We felt like having a micro wedding gave us the opportunity to truly be ourselves and celebrate our journey together with the ones we love. We were able to spend quality time with every one of our guests, creating new memories, and adding touches that made it special and unique. It allowed this intimacy between us, such as reading our own vows and our rose ceremony, that made it forever memorable

Why did you choose a UK Wedding?

JEREMY: Throughout our relationship, travelling has become something that we do quite often and is very important to us both. Devyn studied abroad during grad school and later got to return to the UK with our family. We, of course, fell in love with the country and got engaged in London. When planning our wedding, we knew we wanted to do a destination wedding and felt like it was meant to be.

DEVYN: One of the things we wanted was for our wedding not to feel rushed in a one-day event. One of the perks of having a small wedding party is that we were able to make a vacation of it. Our wedding experience started off with everyone meeting in London. A perfect opportunity to show our friends and family exactly where we got engaged and share with them all the special memories we had made. We later travelled up to Newcastle and then on to our two-night wedding at Ellingham. Our final pit stop was Edinburgh, before returning home to the US.

Did you have a Theme for your Wedding?

DEVYN: We always knew that we wanted something intimate with a darker colour scheme. Our overarching theme was dark romance, really leaning into the deep greens and reds to help make the space warm and intimate for such a small party.

Tell us about your Designer Bridal Gown

DEVYN: My dress was designed by Pnina Tornai and bought from the famous Kleinfeld Boutique in New York, which features in popular TV series ‘Say Yes to the Dress US‘. We joke that the dress helped inspire the vision for the whole wedding. I have never pictured myself in a wedding dress, so I knew it was going to have to be something different, but I wanted long sleeves. My sister, mother, and I were planning a trip to see a show on Broadway, when my mom randomly said, “Why don’t we just see if we can get an appointment at Kleinfeld. It will be something fun and memorable for us to do”.

What were the Special Touches for your Wedding?

JEREMY: We wrote our own vows which was nerve-racking for us both, but we are so pleased that we took the time to do it. It added personality and emotion to the wedding ceremony.

DEVYN: One of our favourite parts of saying ‘I do’ was our ‘Rose Ceremony’. Each of our guests had a rose on their chair and halfway through the ceremony they were asked to walk up and place it in a vase. This symbolised our families becoming one and to create “a garden of love”.

JEREMY: Devyn’s grandmother played the piano for our first dance which was amazing. We hosted our wedding breakfast in the smaller ceremony room and our evening reception in the Entrance Hall, which helped to create an intimate, ambient setting for our micro wedding. As a small wedding party, we chose a cheesecake instead of a traditional wedding cake. It’s one of our favourite desserts and the Ellingham Hall team made our dreams come true when their chefs said they could make us a bespoke Biscoff cheesecake decorated with some of our flowers. It was perfect and delicious!

What did your Guests think about Ellingham?

DEVYN: They loved it! They thought that it was gorgeous. From the stunning reception rooms, luxurious accommodation and décor to the wonderful team that made our day happen. They really enjoyed the two nights, and it allowed them all to really live in the moment.

Did you Enjoy your Two Night Wedding?

JEREMY: It was everything that we dreamed of. Micro weddings can be challenging in their own way, but the way that the Ellingham team were able to make us feel welcome and helped to bring our vision to life is truly a craft. Having the Two Night Stay allowed us the luxury of not rushing. We were able to take time to enjoy and celebrate our wedding day.

What’s your advice for Couples planning their wedding?

DEVYN: Have the wedding that YOU desire. There is no rule book on how a wedding should be, look or what to include. As long as you and your partner are happy, then everything else fades away.

If you want the perfect micro wedding, contact our team today. It doesn’t matter where you live, we’re highly experienced in making wedding dreams come true

Wedding themes often see the earthy rich bronze and brown tones come to life in florals and room styling. The light can often be softer than summer, which is great for your wedding photos, with no harsh midday sun. The fresh natural tones of whites and greens filter into the pretty table décor and bouquets, and the pastel shades adorn the brides tribe.

March and April both fall into mid-season pricing which is an added bonus, but the real jewel in the crown is the gardens and grounds bursting into life. Winter Wedding Colour Trends

When thinking of winter wedding colour trends and winter wedding venues, many automatically think of the festive season with full-bodied colours including deep reds, bold burgundy’s, flashes of gold and of course, towering Christmas trees, but what about the remaining Winter months?

At Ellingham, many of our couples choose to marry in the first few months of the year and we offer free of reduced priced venue hire. So look no further than style inspiration for the winter season showcased through some of our favourite weddings over those colder and frosty months.

Frosted Pastels

Once upon a time, pastel tones were the ‘go-to’ for all summer weddings, but recently frosted takes on the palette have led to the most magical of winter trends for couples.

When it comes to flowers, opt for white anemone, blue thistles and the unmistakable brunia berries to create the dreamiest of bouquets. When Jenn and Ed married back in February, their chosen frosted pastel tones perfectly complimented the snow dusted grounds on the morning of their wedding. With florals by The Blossom Bee florist, the styling couldn’t have been any more perfect for the Winter.

Crisp, classic styling

Looking for romantic and timeless styles, combining soft whites with natural organic hints of green gives the perfect fairy-tale seasonal wedding. These elegant and contemporary tones give a polished finish to all elements of a wedding day. Combining this colour palette with lots of textures and layers gives an overall luxurious feel to weddings in this season.

Ellingham Hall’s beautiful sage and stone colourings in the Chapel couldn’t be more perfect to complement this type of styling. Combine these colours with magic worked by The Whole Sch-Bang and you have your very own Mediterranean Winter right here in Northumberland.

Pops of Colour

From pops of pink to vibrant purples, who says a winter wedding means your colours needs to be predominately white! From bouquets to bridesmaid dresses, we’ve seen some amazing pops of colours during these months. When it came to Olivia and Matthew’s wedding their bright colours injected bursts of beauty into the Hall and everywhere you looked, you saw a colourful array of arrangements to their mid-week winter wedding experience.

Textures and Layers

Adding layers is a simple, yet effective way to add elegance and style to the winter months. But where do you start? Would it be winter without a shawl? Although shawls and snugs are never a necessity during the season, they always add a touch of glamour on the day.

With a whole range to choose from including vintage capes which gives hint of romance, to the stylish and modern wraps which are perfect for the modern bride wanting to add that touch of warmth to day. Check out Accent Original in Newcastle’s Mosley Street, or Epernay Bridal in Melton Park Gosforth for style inspiration!

Wanting to add a luxurious finishing touches? Try finishing off your bouquets with hand tied delicate silk ribbons or even to complete your wedding cake – perfectly tying together elements of your wedding day into your scheme.

Magical lighting and Feel for Fire

As the nights draw in over the winter months, we guarantee you’ll want to get creative with lighting. Why not use fairy lights and copper LED’s to add glowing touches to centrepieces, glow up your favourite spirits or even dramatically light areas of the venue you love – who says fairy lights are just for Christmas time?

Due to the popularity of our weddings over the winter season, we’re pleased to offer atmospheric festoon lighting draped across our beautiful Chapel along with our fabulous firepit perfect for toasting marshmallows and for those show-stopping magical sparkler shots as optional extras. You can also enjoy festoon lighting in the Chapel terrace for an dramatic ambience along with the roaring fires in our homely Reception Rooms.
