When Alanah and Scott Wallace were planning their spring wedding, Alanah already had the perfect wedding venue in mind that she wanted to marry in. But then she visited Ellingham Hall and everything changed!
“I’d seen pictures online of my first-choice venue. I was absolutely sure that was where I wanted to get married,” says Alanah. “We booked a viewing, but beforehand we attended a wedding showcase at Ellingham Hall, and we fell in love with it.
“We both got emotional while looking around, especially when we stood in the beautiful Ceremony Room. It just felt right. As we hadn’t yet visited the other venue, we thought we’d still go and see it to be sure.
“But when we got there, we couldn’t help comparing it to Ellingham Hall. No matter what we looked at, we’d say, ‘But Ellingham Hall is much nicer.’ Or, ‘Ellingham Hall does this better.’”
So the decision was made. And they loved Ellingham Hall so much, they even returned 11 months after their wedding for a special Valentine’s Day treat.
To be honest, it was a lot to do with it being the Easter weekend. We knew that if we chose Easter everyone would be off work on Good Friday. That meant they could drive up (we’re only an hour away) without taking time off, and they could go home on the Sunday knowing they had Monday off. It just made life a lot easier for our guests. When they arrived on the Friday they were already chilled out and had a full evening to enjoy before our wedding day.
We’d never heard of a two-night wedding until we visited Ellingham Hall. Of all the weddings we’ve attended, it’s always been a one-day event. Debbie explained how the three days’ work and we thought, “Why wouldn’t you want to celebrate your wedding for longer than one day?” Everyone I’d spoken to said your wedding day goes over too quickly, so making it a longer celebration was perfect as it didn’t go over as quickly and it gave us more time to spend with family and friends.
Our wedding was amazing. Having exclusive use was perfect for our young son, Alfie, and our little nephews. It meant they could mosey around without getting lost or ending up in another wedding party or event. Everyone got really comfortable, and it was just like a home from home. It worked well for all ages. My Auntie Shirley is 86 and as everything is at ground level she could get around easily. If things got a bit loud, the older guests could find a quiet space in one of the comfortable reception rooms to relax.
Yes. We wanted to put our own stamp on our special day. We had a magician in the afternoon. We weren’t planning on that, however the magician lives in our village and had just started his business, so he asked if he could come along and entertain our guests. It turned out to be great as he entertained them while we were having our photos taken. We also hired a 360 photo booth and set up a sweet table. After the evening reception we booked the After Dark underground wedding after party. We love dancing and music, so it was perfect. We didn’t tell our guests about it, but we did send whispers on the Saturday that there was something extra happening. The underground was buzzing and everyone enjoyed it. Even Auntie Shirley came down – it was so much fun!
Yes, we came for the Valentine’s Dine & Stay event. It was a Christmas present from Scott, which was a lovely sentiment. We got married in March 2024, so it was 11 months after our wedding. It was like being back home. It was a great opportunity to speak to the other couples who had also been married at Ellingham and to hear about their experience and to see their photos. One couple we spoke to was married 10 years ago, and it was nice to hear how the Hall has changed since then. It gave us both a chance to reminisce about our wedding as we walked around the Hall.
Don’t be afraid to put your own stamp on it. Make it your own and enjoy it. The wedding day goes by so quickly. And if you choose Ellingham Hall, try not to cry too much when you depart after your wedding. I didn’t cry on my wedding day but on the Sunday, it really got to me as we packed up to leave. The floodgates opened when I got in the car – the wedding blues really set in as it was incredible!

“I booked a lunch party at Ellingham Hall for a very discerning group comprising of generous supporters of a local charity. We were 27 people and we enjoyed a Champagne reception before a delicious three course lunch. Wendy and her team could not do enough for us, our every request was granted. Dietary requirements were very efficiently and creatively dealt with and the result was a most enjoyable event at a price I was very satisfied with. Ellingham Hall is the most stunning venue, and we knew it was the one for us the moment we stepped inside. We travelled around 3 hours in search of the perfect venue, and after a long search without finding “”the one,”” Ellingham instantly stood out. The staff are absolutely amazing, they went above and beyond to help us create the most perfect day, and it truly was perfect. We honestly can’t thank them enough. From recommending suppliers (since we lived further away), to answering all our questions, to helping us set up for the big day, they were always there for us. We loved that Ellingham is a two-night wedding venue and that it’s exclusively yours during your stay, which made everything feel so personal and intimate. One of our favourite touches was the Poochie Parlour, our dogs are a huge part of our lives, so having a space for them meant everything to us. We’re really hoping they host another Dine & Stay around Christmas or Valentine’s, any excuse to go back! All our guests had such lovely things to say about the staff and the Hall itself. Thank you again for the most amazing day.

“I have hosted seminars for over 30 years, all over the country at various well-known venues. At Ellingham Hall you remember everything, from the beautiful quirky venue which has retained its historic features, the friendly staff, great service and the delicious food and amazing coffee! The meeting room had good light and was the perfect size for our event. It was lovely to have use of the comfortable reception rooms too for breaks and lunch. I was very impressed with the extra spaces such as the basement games room and rooftop networking terrace. It is a hidden jewel in the North-East and I am planning to return soon for a private family event”
