Autumn Wedding Venue’s wow Factor seals deal for Couple!

Autumn Wedding

Mikhaila & Jesse

2nd November 2024

Ellingham Hall was the perfect blend of timeless charm and contemporary elegance, which was exactly the atmosphere Mikhaila & Jesse had been searching for.

The couple who reside in London originally imagined a spring wedding celebration. But the striking red creepers that wrap around the Hall won them over, inspiring a warm and romantic autumn wedding instead.

Notes from the Couple

Why did you choose Ellingham Hall?

We viewed Ellingham Hall in early November 2023 while we were in the North East looking at wedding venues, and we were just blown away by how beautiful the Hall looked. Northumberland is a stunning part of the North East and the Hall is so beautiful and well decorated that it was really easy for us to imagine ourselves and our guests there.

We were looking for somewhere that could accommodate most of our family and friends and that would offer a two-night wedding so that everything could take place in the one setting. We’d viewed some venues that were a bit too oldy-worldy in terms of décor, and some that were much too modern and a bit “quirky” for our taste. Ellingham struck the right balance between the two!

It was a lovely, cold, sunny day when we viewed the Hall, and the leaves of the creepers had turned to gorgeous red tones with the arrival of autumn. That aesthetic helped our decision to opt for an autumn wedding over a spring wedding that we’d originally planned! And when we found out there was some availability for the following November it was a no brainer for us!

Why did you opt for a Celebrant Ceremony?

We were legally married at the Holy Name of Mary Church in Middlesbrough a month before our wedding celebration. Mikhaila adds, “We chose to do that because a lot of my family have been married or christened there and it was my grandparent’s local church, so it means a lot to me!”

At Ellingham, we wanted a ceremony that felt more personal, relaxed, fun, and that meant something a bit more special to us both. We came across Jo the celebrant quite early in our search and she was so bubbly and fun when we had our initial chat, so we booked her straight away.

What was your favourite part of your Wedding Day?

Mikhaila: That’s such a tricky one! If I had to pick one part, it would be the walking into the Ceremony room with my mum and seeing Jesse standing there waiting for me and smiling. Neither of us knew what the other was wearing, so we both had a nice surprise! He looked great, and behind him I could see Jo our celebrant grinning at me at the end of the aisle and the incredible fireplace flower garland that Becca had arranged for us, and it was just a beautiful moment. But my uncle playing Ellingham’s grand piano after dinner and getting everyone singing along would be a close second!

Jesse: It’s a cliché but seeing my wife-to-be appear and walk down the aisle is a memory I will never forget.

What did your Guests think about your Two-Night Wedding?

They loved it! It’s not an exaggeration to say that everyone we spoke to raved about Ellingham Hall and how lovely it was. The indoor open fires were a big hit (as was the fire pit) and people remarked how great it was to have almost everyone in one place. Guests also commented how seamlessly the day itself was managed by the Ellingham team!

What’s your advice to couples planning their Autumn Wedding?

The main thing we would advise is being very mindful about your venue and the optionality it offers: you could get a gorgeous, crisp, sunny day or you could get rain or wind. For us, Ellingham was the perfect choice because we knew that if the weather was good our guests could wrap up and enjoy the outdoor fire pit and lovely grounds – but equally, if the weather was bad, the Hall is large enough with beautiful interiors that we could spend the entire day indoors and it would still be fabulous!

So, when you’re looking at venues think can your venue adapt to the weather? Is it roomy enough inside that everything could happen indoors if it had to? And beyond that, we’d suggest paying attention to the venue staff: Ellingham’s experienced team were fantastic and handled all parts of our wedding day, so we didn’t have to think about a thing! Being able to trust your events team to take care of everything just means the day’s more enjoyable so you and your guests can properly relax!

Bridgerton-Inspired Suits help make Autumn Wedding Perfect!

Bridgerton Wedding

Kyle & John

21st September 2024

Dear Reader, popular TV show Bridgerton was the inspiration behind the stunning suits worn by Kyle and John Blackburn-Wood when they married at Ellingham Hall last September.

In true Bridgerton wedding style – ‘love never plays by the rules!’ The couple decided they didn’t want to wear formal morning suits, but instead, wanted to stand out from their guests during their two-night autumn wedding.

“At the time, I wore a suit every day for work” says John. “We didn’t want to wear traditional suits; we wanted something which was dressy but looked different.”

Seeing the hit Netflix show, inspired the couple to come up with the stand-out attire for their big day. And while the suits were a talking point for surprised guests, they were also surprising for John and Kyle.

“We had our suits custom made in India, and they were the most comfortable suits we’d ever worn” explains Kyle.

John adds, “We were intending on changing for the evening reception because we thought they might be uncomfortable to wear all day. However they were really comfy, so we kept them on.”

“As they were cream, we were terrified they would get dirty quickly, but they fared well, as they still looked spotless at the end of the wedding day,” Kyle adds.

Notes from the Couple

Did you tell Guests about your Suits before the Wedding?

John: Nobody knew about the suits until the day. We just told everyone that we’d gone for something different – no one guessed our style.

Kyle: There was panic from us right up to the day about whether we had done the right thing. But we feel we made the perfect decision.

John: That was probably the biggest thing that made me nervous before we walked down the aisle. I was thinking, “What’s everyone’s reaction going to be to what we’re wearing?” But our guests were all blown away, they thought we looked fantastic.

What made Ellingham Hall your Dream Venue?

John: We originally viewed a venue near to where we live in Rowlands Gill. We liked the fact it had accommodation, and our guests could stay over. I’m from Cumbria and Kyle’s family are from South Shields. We were very close to booking, but then we realised that there could be three or four weddings taking place on the same day and we didn’t want that.

Kyle: We came across Ellingham Hall, and the minute we arrived we knew it was perfect. We loved everything about the two-night wedding experience and the venue offers lots of luxurious accommodation. The grounds for the kids were perfect too.

John: We loved the idea of the two-nights. When we went to view, we were told that an imaginary key would be given to us the night before night and then you hand it back on the morning after. I loved the idea that we were not going to bump into other wedding parties, as the Hall and grounds are exclusively yours during your wedding celebration.

Kyle: It was like our own home for the weekend. We only had close family stay with us the night before. Our parents had met before, but our brothers and sisters had not. It meant there was no awkwardness on the day as everyone had time to get to know one another and chill the night before. At breakfast, everyone was mingling which was lovely to see.

So, your Family enjoyed the Night Before Celebration?

Kyle: Oh yes. No one segregated like you get at most weddings. Some people have made new friends because they had time to get to know one another. In fact, many have stayed in touch and we’re having a garden party for them. It’s lovely and it meant there was no panicking. I was surprised at how relaxed everyone was on the wedding morning.

John: My grandma is 86 and she mentions the wedding and Ellingham Hall all the time. She said it’s the best wedding she’s ever been to and that she’ll ever go to. Her comments stood out a mile for me.

Why did you choose an Autumn Wedding?

John: We normally go on holiday in September; it’s part of our anniversary. It’s also my birthday, but the wedding wasn’t centred around that.

Kyle: And neither of us are sun worshippers. We didn’t want it to be a red-hot weekend. The weather was perfect.

John: We’ve been to weddings in the summer and as you’re all dressed up in a suit you just want to get indoors to cool down. We didn’t want our guests to feel uncomfortable with the heat.

And your Speeches hit a Different Note!

Kyle: We didn’t do the standard, traditional speeches. We had singing waiters who sang them for us. We don’t do tradition at all!

John: The singing waiters were great, and we also booked a string quartet who played as we walked down the aisle as well as a live band and a DJ for the evening party.

Tell us about your Wedding Day?

John: The team at Ellingham Hall were brilliant. One person who stood out to me was Matt. There could have been an issue, as there was a mix up with one of our suppliers. We didn’t know what to do and Matt came up with a solution. He brought us an option to show us and said that if we didn’t think it was right, not to worry. But his idea was perfect, and we were extremely grateful to him.

Kyle: Nothing seemed to be a hassle. You could tell his priority was to ensure we were happy. It’s those small details that you remember.

What’s your advice to couples planning a wedding?

John: Don’t overlook the small details. We added personalised touches such as shots on the table and some people who didn’t drink them, took them home. We also put together little party packs for the kids as their wedding favour. We bought glow sticks for the evening and flip flops for anyone whose feet were sore. It’s those extra touches that our guests still mention.

Kyle: The day goes so fast, make sure you take time away at different points in the day to spend time together. Dru, our photographer, gave us that tip. He was brilliant and had lots of advice. We took 5 or 10 minutes away four or five times just to walk around and take everything in. We were so pleased we did.

John: We also made a point to get up in between each course of the wedding breakfast to go around and talk to people. When we look back, it was the only time we really got to make sure we spoke to everyone.

Kyle: Our last piece of advice is not to walk down the aisle too quickly. We didn’t realise how quickly we walked, but some guests said that they missed us walking down as we were so fast!

Fall in Love with this stunning Autumn Wedding at Ellingham Hall

Bridgerton Wedding

What did you think of the Two-Night Wedding Experience?

We loved it. The fact you have two days to enjoy precious time with friends and family was perfect. It was great for those family members who had travelled, and it gave them a chance to settle in and get to know Sean’s family. It’s nothing like a hotel, it’s homely and the staff solely concentrate on you and your guests during the two nights.

What is your Tip for any Bride-to-Be?

Go for a dress that makes you feel nice and gives you a sense of confidence. Do not over-shop or look elsewhere once you’ve found the one. I think that’s important, as once I’d found my dress, I stopped looking as it’s so easy to keep doubting the choices you’ve made. Don’t look at any more images of other brides, be confident with what you’ve chosen and enjoy your special day.

NOTES FROM THE BRIDE

Why we chose Ellingham Hall

We were first drawn to the two-night wedding experience when we were looking for our wedding venue. We loved the idea of having all our family and friends together for more than just one day.

There were other venues that we’d visited in Northumberland but Ellingham Hall was by far the best that we’d seen. Shaun knew as soon as he walked in that it was where we were getting married.

I was very particular about what I wanted to do. Ellingham Hall just seemed to tick all the boxes. From all the different bedrooms to how the venue looked, both from the outside and inside. And there was the exclusivity, too! We liked the fact that there would be no one else getting married at the same time

Notes from the Couple

Advice for Brides-to-be

Everyone will have an opinion before your wedding – like family, friends – but it’s your wedding at the end of the day, so think about what will make you happy.

We literally did everything that we wanted, and we had opinions about it being so far away for some people. But in the end, everybody loved it. Everyone who we speak to, even months later, go on about how good the wedding was and it was just faultless.

I’d also say be prepared. We wrote everything down, every little detail, all the money that we were spending and just kept track of everything to make sure that everything was sorted in time for the day.

Ellingham Hall proves weddings are Child’s Play!

family friendly wedding venue

Charlene & Brett

2nd September 2021

A family friendly wedding venue was essential when Charlene and Brett decided to tie the knot. As parents of three gorgeous young boys, it was vital that they were a central part of the wedding celebrations.

So, the couple’s choice of venue had to have enough space for Roco, Teddy and Kitt to let off some energy! Ellingham Hall’s fun treehouses, woodland and lawns all set in the private grounds, were the perfect place for the boys to have fun on mum and dad’s special day.

Charlene says that having exclusive use of a venue was also a key factor in their decision when it came to finding their dream venue.

CHARLENE SAYS…

How did Ellingham Hall stand out for you as parents?

It’s a long day and we wanted our boys to be part of it. Unlike a big hotel, where they could end up goodness knows where or mixed up with other hotel guests, we were comfortable that Ellingham Hall had enough space available for them to play and have fun. What really helped was that the venue was completely private to our family and friends for two days and that it felt relaxed like home.

Did they come to the viewing?

We took Roco with us and he had such an exciting time he already felt at ease at the viewing! It’s the warmth of the place that made us feel really relaxed and that helped make our decision.

Your photos show the treehouse featured in your day.

The boys spent a lot of time at the treehouses, even on the morning of the wedding. As I was getting ready, I didn’t have much time to spend with the boys, so my dad took them along to play. The photographer used it in our photos, too, as it was such a great memory for them to look back on! My dress was in a bit of state after that…

Stand out wedding moments?

We were really well cared and catered for. We had a casino the night before and the Ellingham Hall team made sure there was room for it. Nothing seemed to be any problem. We really enjoyed having our photographs taken and the 3-course wedding breakfast was delicious. We had booked our original date in July, but Covid restrictions meant we had to push it back to September as it was the date when all the entertainment, we booked was available again. We had a wonderful time.

What was your guest’s feedback?

Every one of our guests enjoyed the two days, including the evening before. They were pleased to get quality time together. Also, I didn’t feel pressured to see everyone on the wedding day as I’d already spent time with them which was great. We had a lot of guests staying the night before and the cottages were also lovely. It’s nice that they’re set behind the main Hall, so you don’t feel like everyone’s getting under each other’s feet.

It takes two to make a memorable wedding!

Notes from the Couple
So, a two day celebration appealed to you?

James: It was one of the biggest, if not the biggest reason for choosing Ellingham Hall. The issue with things like weddings is they can go really quickly. So, it was nice to have two days and have the night before to be more relaxed and informal. We were able to have a proper catch up with guests and spend time with them. You wouldn’t necessarily get to spend a lot of time with everyone on the day itself.

Ian: It worked well because there were people travelling quite far to co me along. The idea of trying to cram it all into a few hours on the one day was just felt a bit too much. So, the idea of being able to do two days that was more relaxed was definitely what we wanted.

Did guests travel far?

Ian: Most of our family were relatively nearby. We had people from Northumberland, where James is from, and then my family are all in Leeds, so they travelled up. One guest travelled all the way from Toronto in Canada, so it’s quite a distance for them! There were also people from around the UK, such as Birmingham, as well as from Jersey.

What did they think of your venue choice?

Ian: They loved it. I would say about 90% of guests were able to join for both days and they had a snoop around on the night before and really enjoyed that. The main feedback we had from all the guests was just how they didn’t feel like they were just a guest at a wedding venue. They felt much more relaxed and spent much more time actually enjoying the venue than you would at a hotel for one day.

James: I think it’s because it almost feels like home when you’re having it for two days as well. My Best Man’s got a little boy, and when he was leaving, he said that he really liked our house! He just thought it was our home. You do almost feel like you live there, which is kind of warm!

And how was the wedding day?

Ian: It was really good. I’d not slept much the night before, so I was awake from about 2am, but it all just kind of went really smoothly. We could hear our guests waking up and getting ready, so we were able to pop in and see them. That was really exciting be cause it was all part of the build up…

James: And once we’d spoken to all the suppliers, we had chance to walk around the grounds and take some time for ourselves. We appreciated that and Ellingham Hall having the space to find those moments when we could on our own before the wedding.

Your advice to those planning a wedding?

Ian: Don’t stress over things that aren’t important! You’re there to get married and celebrate with the people that you love, your friends and family. So, enjoy your time.

James: I think that’s why Elllingham Hall works so well. It lets you do that but at a really good pace. It doesn’t feel rushed because it’s a two night experience and it will go really
fast! But if you’re somewhere like Ellingham Hall, then you can make the most of the time that you’ve got!

What’s your advice to couples planning a wedding?

Notes from the Bride

AMY SAYS….

How was your switch to an autumn wedding?

It couldn’t have been more perfect. Looking at our photos, the colours of the leaves of the hall outside are just amazing. I felt so lucky that they were still there in November when we got married. It had such a different vibe!

We had planned to get married in July 2020, but the restrictions meant we moved it to June 2021. But with restrictions still in place, we couldn’t have all our guests with us. We then decided to move the date again to November!

So, it worked out ok?

Definitely. It was even more cosy and homely, with the red and gold leaves and the deck all lit up with fairy lights. We had autumn sunshine and it was quite a mild day. The photographer loved how the light was coming into the Wedding Suite. They said it was fantastic for our photos, which look amazing.

What was your guests experience?

They said the same about it being such a welcoming place. It was so relaxing, and a couple of people commented on the relaxed and warm vibe. There was a range of ages, and they were all happy. As we had exclusive use, it was nice and easy for everyone, and it suited those who are parents. We had about five children in our party. All our guests loved the food!

Were you both happy with the food?

The food was out of this world! We had a lemon theme because we got engaged in Sorrento, so we wanted an Italian vibe. I’d put out lemons on the tables to go with the flowers, and I guess you couldn’t do that in a hotel! We noticed that even though we didn’t mention the lemon theme to the Ellingham Hall team, the chef had put candied lemon on our sticky toffee pudding dessert, which was such a lovely thoughtful touch. It was that attention to detail that made it so special. And we were also able to tweak our drinks package to include limoncello for our toast, which was very good of the team.

Did you manage to relax?

Oh yes. We drove up from Sunderland the night before and I was quite nervous but also excited. But as soon as got unpacked and put our comfy clothes on we felt relaxed. It was lovely to be here the night before with our guests especially with it being autumn and that made i t feel even more cosy inside.

Why did you choose to travel to a venue?

We wanted to get married in the stunning Northumberland countryside and we had looked at a few venues around the area. But as soon as we got to Ellingham Hall and pulled up in front of the Hall we just knew this was going to be the right place. It has a “wow” factor, and the rooms are modern, but not too modern that it spoils the history of the Hall. We noticed it was surrounded by all those lovely trees, which turned out to feature more in our wedding than we expected them to.

Couple drive 400 miles to beat Lockdown restrictions

autumn wedding

Ami and Kam

Original Wedding Date : Saturday 7th November 2020
Wedding Status : Married 4th November 2020

Amy and Kam drove 400 miles to their dream Northumberland Wedding Venue, only hours before Covid restrictions were put in place.

Notes from the Couple…

As soon as we walked through the door, we knew Ellingham was the right venue for us. It was really warm and cosy, with all the fires roaring and Anthony, the Managing Director who we met on our first visit, was just so lovely and down-to-earth! We were greeted with big mugs of hot tea and sat by the fire in the blue room for our initial conversation and didn’t want to leave. The service we received from our very first visit at Ellingham Hall wildly outdid any other venue we saw…and we saw a lot!

Our original plan was a huge 130 guest Autumn wedding so we could share our big day with all our family and friends from Northumberland (where I am from) and Dorset (where Kamron’s family are from and where we now live). We had booked a band, almost sorted out everyone’s accommodation and were very excited to enjoy a weekend of festivities at the stunning venue.

Once the pandemic hit and as our wedding date got closer, the team at the Hall guided us through what our various options were when restrictions changed, and changed again!

Our original date was 07.11.2020, until less than a week before this, Boris announced Lockdown 3.0 was to come into effect from 05.11.2020. That put a stopper on our original date! But, by nothing short of a miracle, we were able to reschedule our day at our dream Northumberland Wedding Venue to the 4th November. Our calls with Anthony on the run up to the wedding kept us sane. When we did decide to move our wedding forward by a couple of days at very short notice – they really pulled out all the stops and worked through the night to make it happen for us and we will forever be grateful.

Our family have described our wedding day as “magical”, “a fairy tale” and “just the best day”! Not having over 100 guests present meant our two families really got to know each other, which really means a lot to us as they live a seven-hour car journey apart.

Despite all the last-minute changes, and the stresses of the last year-and-a-bit of planning a wedding during a global pandemic, our wedding really was the best day of our lives – and we wouldn’t have changed a thing! Apart from maybe booking our string trio, Aurora Strings, for longer than we did – they were simply incredible and filled the hall with the most enchanting music!

If there’s any advice we could give to couples it would be 100% be to just go for it! Go ahead, stick to your date and have the best day of your lives with the people around you who you care about most. We only had two small concerns on the days running up to the wedding which was would 15 people look out of place at Ellingham? i.e. reception rooms would look empty with our restricted numbers? Not at all! Even the large airy chapel, where we chose to have our wedding ceremony worked so well.

One of our other concerns was that there wouldn’t be much we could do to keep guests (and ourselves!) entertained for a full day, but we didn’t stop – in the best way! In the absence of an evening of dancing, we had our first dance outside surrounded by sparklers before we all gathered round the newly installed firepit where the Ellingham team surprised us with hot chocolates, marshmallows and extendable forks for melting them! We then retreated inside for a game of “Mr & Mrs” and later in the evening we settled down in the “blue room” for a movie night on a gigantic projector screen with comfy sofas and beanbags, drinks, popcorn, sweets and wedding cake. It was a blissfully busy day!

From the very outset, the amazing Ellingham team could not do enough for us. David and Wendy were fantastic and couldn’t have done any more for us throughout the day itself, nothing was a bother and they felt like an extension of our guestlist!

You won’t regret it one little bit. Secondly choose an amazing photographer and videographer to capture your day in all of its glory – you can then share all the best bits with all the people who weren’t able to attend on the day and they will feel like they were there anyway! We would highly recommend Carn Patrick Photography and Abigail Grace Videography – they were the actual dream team!
